Paradigm Mall Johor Bahru sits on the Skudai Highway in Taman Bukit Mewah and is the mall that takes the entertainment brief more seriously than any other in the city. Opened in 2017 and spread across 1.3 million square feet with more than 500 tenants, it is the largest single roofed mall in JB. Where Mid Valley Southkey leads on retail and Toppen leads on the IKEA ecosystem, Paradigm is the mall you go to when the point of the trip is to do something rather than to buy something.
Blue Ice Skating Rink, the only one in JB
The headline act at Paradigm is Blue Ice Skating Rink, the sole indoor ice rink in Johor Bahru. It sits on the lower ground floor and runs a full sized rink with rental skates, lockers and coaching sessions. Walk in sessions cost around RM25 to RM35 on weekdays and RM35 to RM45 on weekends, with skate rental included. The rink draws a steady crowd of families, dating couples and a small community of regular skaters who treat it as their weekend training spot. If you have never skated, the beginner penguin supports are available for kids and the ice is staffed. It is cold inside, genuinely cold, so bring a jacket even on a 33 degree JB afternoon.
Camp5 rock climbing and Stars Archery
Up on the upper floors, Camp5 runs a proper indoor climbing gym with top rope, lead and bouldering walls. It is the sister facility to the Rocky Basecamp over at Aeon Tebrau, and it skews more toward roped climbing than bouldering. Day passes run around RM30 to RM50 depending on gear rental, and there is an instructors desk for first timers. Nearby, Stars Archery runs a lanes based archery range with coached sessions, which is the kind of tenant you do not expect to find in a shopping mall and is exactly the point of Paradigm's entertainment mix.
GSC MAXX and the cinema
The cinema at Paradigm is GSC MAXX, the larger format Golden Screen Cinemas brand. It runs a single MAXX hall with a wall to wall screen and Dolby Atmos, alongside a set of standard halls. The MAXX hall is the best single cinema screen in JB for blockbusters, and tickets run around RM20 to RM35 depending on the format and time. Booking online is the only sensible move on weekends, the popular shows sell out fast. The cinema sits on the top floor alongside the food court, which makes for a clean evening itinerary of dinner then film without needing to move floors much.
The dining floor and what is worth eating
Paradigm takes food seriously and the tenant list reflects it. Ichiban Ramen on Level 3 runs a solid Chicken Chashu Ramen at RM19.90 with sides like Gyoza at RM13 and Ebi Tempura at RM18.90. Vivo Pizza on Level 4 does a Premium Chef's Favourite 14 inch pizza at RM55.50 and a respectable Carbonara Linguine at RM30.90. Aston Specialities, the Singapore steak chain, runs a Prime Ribeye at RM74.90 and a New York Strip at RM72.90, which is genuine steakhouse territory at JB prices. dipndip handles the chocolate dessert brief with a Crunchy Chocolate Pancake at RM34.10 and an Oh My S'mores crepe at RM42.90. Thong Bowl on the ground floor does a halal Thai beef noodle bowl with Australian Wagyu at RM39.90 and a deliberately oversized Mega Thai Milk Tea at RM29.90. The newest addition in 2025 is Chao Shan on Level 7, a Chaozhou Chinese restaurant with a Crab Yellow Sauce Seafood Fried Rice at RM22.90 that is worth the lift ride up.
The J-BIO concept
J-BIO, short for Johor Bahru Innovation Outlet, is a curated retail floor within Paradigm that brings together local Johor brands under one roof. The concept is part retail, part showcase, and it is the place in the mall where you find products you cannot get elsewhere in JB. There are local food brands, fashion labels, craft homewares and a small batch of F&B counters run by Johor based operators. It is the clearest expression of what Paradigm is trying to do differently from the other JB malls, leaning into local identity rather than chasing the same national and international tenant list everyone else carries. If you want a Johor made souvenir or a gift that is not from a chain, J-BIO is the floor to head to.
The home and lifestyle block
Paradigm also does the home and lifestyle block well. HomePro runs a large format home improvement store, Harvey Norman handles electronics and furniture, and Daiso runs the fixed price variety floor. Combined with the entertainment tenants, this makes Paradigm the most family complete mall in JB. You can drop a teenager at the climbing wall, take a younger kid ice skating, do the grocery run and buy a new kettle in a single trip, which is not something you can say about any other mall in the city.
Getting to Paradigm Mall
Paradigm Mall is at K013, Skudai Highway, Taman Bukit Mewah, 81200 Johor Bahru. From JB Sentral it is a 15 to 20 minute Grab at roughly RM18 to RM25, depending on traffic. The mall sits on the Skudai Highway which is the main western corridor out of JB, so it is straightforward by car or ride hailing. There is no direct train link. Causeway Link bus LM1 runs past Paradigm from JB Sentral and is the budget option at a few ringgit. The parking complex is large, multi level and reasonably priced, with the first two hours free and a flat RM1 per hour after that, capped at RM8 per day. On weekends the basement fills by early afternoon, so use the upper levels first, they are closer to the entertainment floor anyway.
When to go and when to avoid
Paradigm is genuinely busy on weekends, especially Saturday evenings when the cinema and ice rink are both running full. If you want the rink to yourself, go on a weekday morning. If you want a quiet meal, the upper food floor is calmer than the ground floor food court at lunch. The mall opens at 10am and closes at 10pm daily, and the entertainment tenants keep slightly different hours, so check the cinema and rink schedules before you commit to a specific time.
